Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The present study examined how well L2 learners can utilize sentence construction familiarity (SCF) information in L2 sentence comprehension. Forty-eight Japanese learners of L2 English with low-intermediate proficiency completed a dialogue-style stop-making-sense task in which they read a filler-gap sentence containing a transitive, dative, or object-control verb with varying degrees of SCF word-by-word and pressed a designated key upon detecting a semantic anomaly. Main findings are an earlier activation of the transitive argument structure when reading sentences with a higher transitive SCF, and inefficient utilization of dative and object-control argument structures. The dative results also suggest that it is important to take "relative" SCF into account when considering the SCF effect on L2 processing performance with verbs containing multiple sentence constructions.
