Abstract(in English) In response to the spirit of International Mother Language Day (February 21) proclaimed by the General Conference of UNESCO and a growing awareness that languages play a vital role in process of integration into all aspects of public life, particularly in education, this paper raises an issue of how mother-tongue-based formal education is important for children’s cognitive development. It takes up one of the most complicated multilingual communities in the Philippines, and discusses linguistic and cognitive problems encountered in formal education there. It suggests that similar problems are shared worldwide, though possible solutions are not easy to come by.
