Millimeter-wave deflection devices using a liquid-crystal/dielectric material multilayered structure

Abstract(in English) Millimeter wave has been applied to the automotive radar and full-body scanner. However, mechanical scanning of the millimeter wave has a problem with cost and space. Liquid crystal materials that have dielectric anisotropy and large electro-optical effects, are candidates for microwave and millimeter-wave modulation devices. In this study, the liquid crystal / dielectric material multilayered structure which has a gradient of liquid-crystal layer widths and stacked in alternating liquid-crystal layers and dielectric layers are proposed. The millimeter-wave deflection properties of the liquid-crystal cell are calculated by using FDTD method and measured at 90GHz band.
