Production of Wh-question Sentences by Japanese EFL Learners in Interactions with Native Speakers of English

Abstract(in English) The authors are conducting various research to show that training and experiences of oral interaction helps Japanese EFL learners the kind of proficiency in English that would enable them to engage in meaningful exchange in the target language. In this study, we report on a preliminary analysis of interactions in English between Japanese EFL learners and native speakers of English for twenty minutes based on transcriptions of those oral interactions. A series of previous research by the authors have suggested that Japanese EFL learners are in general not confident in their listening and speaking abilities and in fact their listening and speaking performance is much lower than their mastery of English in terms of knowledge of vocabulary, collocation and grammar. Meaningful exchange of ideas consists of a series of statements, questions, responses and comments, not necessarily in this fixed order, but in oral interactions, Japanese EFL learners show additional difficulty in producing question sentences, especially those starting with wh-phrases. A preliminary analysis of the current interaction data suggests that this observation is born out here too.
