Demonstration and Theoretical Analyze of the Drive-amplitude-independent Auto Bias Control Technic for IQ Modulator

Abstract(in English) An external optical modulator widely used in an optical transmission system is required to add an appropriate bias voltage. The optimum bias voltage is different for each product, and depend on carrier wavelength and temperature. So then, an auto bias control (ABC) technique is essential. However, control penalty of the conventional ABC techniques are strongly depend on the amplitude of the driver signal. It means that it is difficult to select the driver amplitude appropriate for each signal format. In this paper, we proposed driver-amplitude-independent ABC technique. We show the theoretical analyze and demonstration of this ABC technique, using InP based IQ modulator and optical Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) signal.
