Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In cortical networks, spontaneous firing activities characterized by irregulars and asynchronous neuronal firings have been widely observed. Despite numerous theoretical attempts, the mechanism underling the spontaneous firing activity remained unclear. Teramae et al., (2012), has recently proposed a neural network model with lognormally distributed EPSPs (Excitatory Postsynaptic Potentials). It has clarified that coexistence of many weak and few extremely strong EPSPs play an importance role for sustaining the low firing neural activities. Although the model is based on a deterministic nonlinear system, neuronal activities in the cortex are known to be inherently noisy including various stochastic factors. To examine the cooperatively between the lognormal network and stochastic dynamics, this paper introduces Poisson noise as an external input source to the lognormal cortical network. First, we show that a network of lognormally distributed EPSPs requires much lower frequency of noise than that of normally distributed EPSPs to sustain spontaneous firings. Then, simulations with binomial distribution suggest that coexistence of many weak and few extremely strong EPSPs are the keys to realize spontaneous firing activities with low-frequency noise
