Abstract(in English) Recently, preventive safety systems for automobiles such as parking assistance systems have evolved considerably and have become prevalent. Obstacle detection devices for parking assistance systems typically make use of air-coupled ultrasonic sensors. Ultrasonic sensors are usually attached to automobiles through through-holes in their bumpers. For this reason, new structures with ultrasonic sensors attached on the back side of bumpers without through-holes are being required. However, the directional characteristics of ultrasonic waves radiated from these structures are affected by the bumper, and then side-lobes occur. In this paper, the method of side-lobes suppression is examined. We attempt to reduce the side-lobes by suppressing the unnecessary vibrations on the bumper using annular convex rings made of aluminum. We show that the side-lobes can be reduced by suppressing bumper vibrations.
