Abstract(in English) | Strongly coupled multicore fiber (SC-MCF) has been proposed for realizing spatial division multiplexing transmission. In SC-MCF, differential delays between spatial channels are very small, thanks to random mode coupling. Spatial mode dispersion (SMD) has been defined for characterizing an SC-MCF in a similar manner to polarization mode dispersion in single-mode fiber. While the SMD can be expected to change locally in a transmission line with respect to fiber bending or twisting caused by cabling or cable installation, conventional measurement methods cannot characterize the local SMDs nondestructively. In this paper, we demonstrate the SMD distribution measurement along SC-MCF using Rayleigh backscattering interference pattern obtained with coherent optical reflectometry. |
