Multi-sensor monitoring of Sea Fog in the Western Coastal Region of Korean Peninsula Using Geostationary and Polar-orbiting Satellite

Abstract(in English) Some sea fog events over the coastal regions of Korean Peninsula during summer of 2014 to 2016 were studied using geostationary and polar orbiting satellite images. Images from Geostationary Ocean Color Imager were used for its high spatial and temporal resolution images. However, it lacks nighttime images which were supplemented by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data from both Terra and Aqua satellites for their continuous monitoring. Sea fogs were detected by machine learning, and combinedly studied with in-situ visibility and sea surface temperature data from meteorological observatories of Korea Meteorological Administration, and WRF model sea surface wind data.
