Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | According to Terror Management Theory, self-esteem and culture worldview serve as buffers against the anxiety of death. Previous research suggests that reminders of death can increase one’s behaviors (for example: prosocial behaviors) which meet the standards of our cultural world-views. The purpose of this study was to prove the existence of culture worldview directly by using a human extinction scenario (‘End-of-the-world’ mortality salience condition). Also, this research examined whether the interaction between mortality salience and self-transcendent values will make an impact on prosocial decision-making. Results of the survey showed only a main effect of self-transcendent values, suggesting that participants scoring high in self-transcendent values showed more support for the charity. However, there were the possibilities that 1. the mortality salience manipulation was not successful; 2.the task of prosocial decision-making was lack the sense of reality. |
