Effect of Electrical Appliances Connection on Signal Propagation Characteristics and Communication Quality of Narrow-band PLC in a Large-scale Building

Abstract(in English) NB-PLC is an advantageous candidate for communication in environmental/energy information gathering systems for large-scale buildings. For the realization of such systems, knowledge of PLC channel and communication quality is essential, however, there is very few measurement reports for large-scale buildings in Japan. This study, thus, measures transmission success ratio (TSR) and propagation losses between 36 pairs of outlets. The results of the measurements show that channels with DC coupling between communicating outlets achieves good TSR, while some channels without DC coupling also provides high TSR. The results also show that TSR depends on communication directions between the same pair of outlets. The results of propagation loss also shows the same tendency. It is also found that some channels between the same outlet, and thus with zero distance, show large propagation loss. As a result of this, we also measures and discusses the influence of electrical appliances online to the propagation loss.
