Abstract(in English) In this research, lithium niobate (LN) single crystal and a two-step firing process were used to obtain dense LN ceramics which is material with low sinterability. The effects of the two-step firing process and single crystal on sintering of LN were investigated. LN single phase ceramics with a relative density of about 95% can be obtained without sintering aid and solid solution. This is due to that normal grain growth occurred in the 1st step of the two-step firing process suppressed a rapid grain growth in the subsequent 2nd step at higher temperature. It was confirmed that grain growth and densification were promoted when ceramics were sandwiched between LN single crystals during sintering, compared to ceramics prepared without single crystals. Promotion of sintering by LN single crystals is concluded from the fact that the density and average grain size of LN ceramics sintered by using a heavier Al2O3 plate were almost the same as LN ceramics without single crystals.
