Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This report deals with spatial search behaviour of one congenitally blind person in entirely unknown space. Since the blind walker uses nonvisual environmental information for spatial cognition, her perception is restricted. The results of our observations show: (1) The walker sets up one reference point, and expands search area in a route based and tree-structured manner using spatial inference. (2) The walker always keeps in a mind a route to the reference point, and maintains orientation. (3) The walker generates a route based map through spatial cognition. (4) It is not easy to revise spatial understanding, and to integrate partial environmental understanding into larger one. Although our study is based on free walk that is different from usual training of orientation and mobility(O&M), certain results presented in this report will be useful for understanding the behaviour of blind people.
