Abstract(in English) Ever increasing network traffic and the emerging bandwidth-intensive applications require high availability and cost-effectiveness of backbone optical networks. Various architectures are being developed in last decades, but one of the important criterions to make it deploy is its cost effectiveness. In meeting the increasing traffic demand, a conventional way to expand the current optical network is very costly. To resolve this issue, new optical components are being developed, and diffferent node architectures have been considered as promising candidates. This paper presents a comparison between these architectures: subsystem modular OXC architecture (sub-OXC) and a Fiber Cross Connect (FXC) , where the conventional architecture is taken as a beseline so that the effectiveness of the new approaches in terms of their total network cost can be clarified. It is proved that the subsystem modular OXC architecture is cost-effective over a wide range of traffic demand.
