Abstract(in English) | Network disaster recovery is one of the most important issues for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and first responders as the increasing importance of mobile communications during natural disasters such as earthquakes. Wireless Multi-hop Networking (WMN) that can quickly and efficiently recover the network coverage in disaster scenarios, has been received a lot of attentions recently. In this paper, we address the problem that how to efficiently deploy a limited number of relays for a wireless multi-hop network in order to extend network coverage as much as possible with the consideration of shelters where people are gathered after a disaster occurs. We formulate this problem as a Population-Aware Relay Placement (PARP) problem and propose a two-step heuristic algorithm to efficiently solve it. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is evaluated with extensive simulation, which demonstrates the performance improvements in terms of population coverage and computing time by comparing to the existing algorithm. |
