Low loss splice between large effective area ring-core fiber and standard effective area fiber with fluorine-doped cladding

Abstract(in English) We achieved a splice loss as low as 0.08 dB between a large effective area (Aeff = 148 µm2) fiber and a standard Aeff (83 µm2) fiber by using an arc fusion splicer. This ultra-low dissimilar splice loss is attributed to large Aeff ring-core fibers, which have a smaller mode field diameter (MFD) compared to step-core fibers, and a standard Aeff fiber with fluorine-doped cladding, which enables large expansion of the MFD by arc fusion. The MFD mismatch between these fibers is well reduced by a fusion splice that results in the ultra-low splice loss.
