10-Mode-Multiplexed Transmission over 81km Weakly-coupled Few-mode Fiber with Partial MIMO Equalizers

Abstract(in English) Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) transmission technique using a few-mode fiber (FMF) is attractive for increasing the transmission capacity in a single fiber. Recently, the MDM transmission experiments with a mode multiplicity over 10 have been reported. In these MDM transmission experiments using FMFs, the mode coupling is compensated by a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal processing at the receiver side. However, since the differential mode delay (DMD) increases with the transmission distance and the number of multiplexed spatial modes, the MIMO signal processing becomes more complicated in longer distance transmission with larger number of spatial modes. In this paper, we show the feasibility study for reduction of the MIMO complexity using weakly-coupled MDM technique, and report our recent demonstrations of a 10-mode multiplexed transmission of 10-Gbaud DP (dual polarisation)-QPSK (quadrature phase shift keying) WDM signals over 81-km weakly-coupled FMF by using highly-mode-selective 10-mode multiplexer/de-multiplexer with a 2x2 or 4x4 partial MIMO processing.
