Abstract(in English) | Our previous study has shown that, comparing to the conventional metal-based ultrasonic motors, the polymer-based ultrasonic motors yield relatively high rotational speeds, but low output torques and power. In this study, we compared the elliptical motion shapes and the force factors, which affected the motor performance, between the polymer- and metal-based vibrators with the same structures. The polymer-based vibrators with practical dimensions yield much lower force factors than the metal-based vibrators owing to the great difference in the material constants between polymers and piezoelectric ceramics. Though the polymer-based thick vibrators can yield a force factor comparable to those of metal-based ones, the undesirable vibration components become large, and lead to the high frictional loss. To improve the motor performance, first, we introduced a triple-layered vibrator and optimally selected the vibration mode of the polymer-based vibrator. An alumina layer was sandwiched between the polymer vibrating body and the piezoelectric ceramic plate to enhance the force factor. Then, we excited a higher-order vibration mode exhibiting a higher electromechanical coupling factor than the commonly-used bending mode on the polymer-based motor. The experimental results indicate that the motor performance is improved by using the triple-layered vibrator and the higher-order mode. |
