Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we propose an antenna pattern modulation (APM) to exploit path diversity in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) receivers without increasing the antenna size. In APM, antenna patterns are changed or modulated by periodic functions of time. As periodic functions, we assume the sum of multiple spreading code sequences used in direct-sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) systems or code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. By DS/SS modulation of received signals, the signals can be mapped into the code domain of used code sequences. Each signal component of a code sequence can be extracted from the antenna output by correlating operation. The component is available to maximize diversity gain by multiplying appropriate weight with the component and combining the weighted signals. We introduce antenna pattern matrix whose elements are coefficients of code sequences used in APM. By using the matrix, we can derive the channel capacity of MIMO systems with APM based receiver as the equivalent form of that of the conventional MIMO systems. Numerical results show that the channel capacity of the proposed MIMO system can be increased by the number of arrival paths. Therefore, the proposed systems can exploit path diversity. However, if the variations of antenna pattern coefficients are poor, the capacity can be decreased. Thus, it can be found that the channel capacity can be limited by the distribution of the coefficients.
