An LOD-FDTD method for the analysis of plasmonic devices in cylindrical coordinates

Abstract(in English) Since the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is an explicit scheme, a time step size ($Delta{t}$) is restricted by spatial mesh sizes, which is known as the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition. Note, in cylindrical coordinates, that the circumferential mesh size close to the center axis becomes inevitably small with a subsequent small $Delta{t}$, resulting in a long computation time. Therefore, we have developed an implicit cylindrical FDTD method based on the locally one-dimensional (LOD) scheme for the efficient analysis of cylindrical devices. In this article, the cylindrical LOD-FDTD method is extended to a frequency-dependent version for the analysis of plasmonic devices. The formulation using the fundamental scheme is performed in matrix-operator-free forms in the right-hand sides of the resultant equations. We analyze surface plasmon polariton waves propagating along a metal rod grating. It is shown that the computation time is reduced in comparison with the conventional explicit FDTD method, while maintaining acceptable numerical results.
