Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Rare-earth ions, which can amplify the specific wavelength light by stimulated emission are utilized for various optical amplification devices such as optical fiber amplifiers and fiber lasers. These devices are required to be miniaturized and enhanced in efficiency, for they are expected to be integrated into other apparatuses for micro-fabrication and high-power processing. However, it is known that we cannot obtain enough gain due to concentration quenching when highly concentrated rare-earth ions are added into host materials to realize compact optical fiber amplifiers. Therefore, as a novel material which can reduce concentration quenching, “Rare-earth metal (for example, Europium (Ⅲ)-Aluminum (Eu-Al) )polymer composite” was developed by KRI, Inc. In our previous research, we fabricated optical polymer waveguides and observed optical amplification gain based on VSL method. Accordingly, in this research, optical waveguides of various core diameters and lengths are fabricated by the Mosquito method using the same material as a core material targeting to realize single-mode operation. Additionally, by direct measuring stimulated emission under coaxial excitation, which is practical, the optical amplification efficiency of the fabricated rare-earth incorporated waveguide is evaluated.
