Optical frequency comb generation by electro-optic chirp modulator integrated with microwave power splitter circuit

Abstract(in English) The generation conditions of the frequency comb signals that are composed of relatively small number, seven or nine, of spectrum components were investigated by using a Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator (MZM). By the numerical calculations, it was found that the optical comb signal of less than 4dB flatness can be obtained at modulation index of around 2π rad by using a single MZM with the frequency chirp modulation. Moreover, it was also found that the perfect flatness can be realized by adjusting the optical power split ratio in Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The frequency chirp modulator was designed and fabricated using rat-race circuit with an asymmetric power split ratio integrated with modulation electrodes on a single substrate. An optical frequency comb signals of seven spectrum components with flatness of 1.92 dB was obtained by using a 10.8GHz modulation signal.
