Bacterial contamination in dialysis fluid and bactericidal effects of near UV-light emitting diodes

Abstract(in English) In recent years, the number of maintenance dialysis patient is increasing in Japan. In maintenance hemodialysis (HD), the number of on-line hemodialysis filtration (OL-HDF) patient is increasing from 2012. OL-HDF, which combines diffusive and convective transport, is superior to conventional HD in terms of clearance of small solutes, such as urea and middle molecules, like β-2 microglobulin. Therefore ultra pure dialysis fluid (substitution fluid) without bacterial contamination is necessary for OL-HDF. We recently reported that near ultraviolet irradiations by light emitting diode (near UV-LEDs) disinfected pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. In this study, we investigated that near UV-LEDs irradiation could disinfect the bacteria which contaminated into dialysis fluid. First, we collected dialysis fluids at three hospitals in Tokushima Prefecture and monitored bacterial contamination in dialysis fluids. Next, we measured the bactericidal effect of near UV-LEDs irradiation on the bacteria in dialysis fluid. Lastly, we measured the effect of near UV-LEDs irradiation on the concentration of the components in dialysis fluid.
