Estimation of Nerve Changes by Brain Tumor Adjusting Membrane Electrical Parameters

Abstract(in English) In recent years, brain mapping of the motor and linguistic functions is adopted preoperatively to remove brain tumor during surgery. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Direct Electrical Stimulation (DES) are one of the methods for brain mapping. The recorded waveform of the MEPs has shown differences between mapping a target brain area with and without tumor. However, there is no explanation for this phenomenon. We hypothesized that the tumor might affect the morphological and electrical properties of the nerve. In this study, we implemented a compartmental model axon that mimics the electrical behavior of pyramidal neurons in the brain to investigate this hypothesis. Then, we assumed changes in the electric parameter of a neuron model’s axon due to the brain tumor that produced MEPs’ waveform similar to the experimental measurements.
