Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Four-year rain attenuation statistics from January 2003 to September 2006 are obtained for both up and down links of Ku-band Superbird C, which connects the earth stations in Equatorial Atmosphere Radar (EAR) in West Sumatra, Indonesia and Research Institute of Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH) of Kyoto University in Uji, Kyoto. Yearly variation of the attenuation ratio of up link to down link is discussed in light of dominant rain cloud types in each year. The attenuation ratio at the earth station in EAR, on an average, shows fairy large variation from around 1.1 to 1.5 according to each rainfall event, yielding comparatively large values for the events with a single peak of attenuation and small values for those with the multiple peaks. This seems to be related to a tendency that the clouds passing through the propagation path may include larger raindrop size distribution as their scales become larger. The relationship between these rain cloud types and characteristics of equatorial climate should be further investigated, such as their yearly variation or difference between wet and dry seasons in the tropical region.
