Estimation of transmit-receive response and its application to method for improvement of range spatial resolution

Abstract(in English) The range spatial resolution is one of the elements which is related to an image quality in the ultrasonic imaging. We developed a filter based on the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of the distribution of ultrasonic scattering strength for improvement of the range spatial resolution of a B-mode image. Although the range spatial resolution was improved by using the proposed ML filter, its performance might depend on the propagation medium of an imaging target. The goal of this study is the improvement of the performance of the proposed filter in terms of the range spatial resolution and the penetration. In the present study, the transmit-receive response of an ultrasound imaging system, which is included in a discrete echo signal model, was estimated using echo signals obtained from an imaging target. In addition, transmit-receive responses were computed region by region in the range direction to consider the change in the ultrasonic waveform due to the frequency dependent attenuation of the propagation medium. The estimated transmit-receive response was used for the corresponding region. The performance of the proposed method was evaluated by comparing a B-mode image of a phantom obtained with the proposed method to that obtained with the conventional method. The results showed that the axial half maximum of an echo from a fine wire was smaller than that obtained with the conventional method.
