Receiver-sensitivity Analyses of the Stokes Analyzer Demodulating Dual-polarization PAM Signals

Abstract(in English) We can demodulate the dual-polarization pulse-amplitude-modulation (DP-PAM) signal with direct detection, where the Stokes analyzer and digital signal processing (DSP) are introduced. After describing the principle of operation of the Stokes analyzer and its applications to optical communication receivers, this paper discusses the novel configuration of the Stokes analyzer and DSP, which maximizes the receiver sensitivity. Next, we evaluate the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the DP-PAM4 signal at the symbol rate of 25 Gbaud (100 Gbit/s) through intensive computer simulations. The simulation results show that the power penalty owing to the polarization demultiplexing process is as small as 3.5 dB in the unbalanced configuration of the Stokes analyzer, whereas that in the balanced configuration is 5 dB. Thus, our receiver is a promising candidate for short/medium-reach 100-Gbit/s applications.
