Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We examined discrimination between reaching movements and hitting movements for the sake of our previously proposed technique of obtaining the visually perceived positions. This technique obtains the visually perceived positions of virtual objects seen above the screens of 3-D displays by utilizing users’ reaching movements or hitting movements. Although our previous studies demonstrated the feasibility or usefulness of this technique, the problems with discrimination between reaching movements and hitting movements were unsolved. In this study, we measured reaching movements or hitting movements for real objects, and analyzed them to find the threshold for the discrimination. The results obtained from the experiments indicate that reaching movements and hitting movements can be discriminated by using 12–15 cm/s of velocity as the threshold. These findings demonstrated the feasibility of the technique.
