Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Voice interaction with communication robots is becoming popular. A common problem is that novice users have the impression that the robot is not listening to them. Previous studies have shown that non-verbal back-channels such as body motion are effective in enhancing verbal communication. However, whether body motion is also effective for communication with a movement-limited robot or not has not been investigated. This study investigates the effectiveness of adding body motion to enhance communication with a standard model robot. As the first step, we select nodding, implement in a robot and evaluate its effectiveness. The results show that nodding motion can significantly enhance the ease of communicating with a robot.
