Abstract(in English) | Electroencephalography (EEG) studies of working memory (WM) have demonstrated oscillatory representations and mechanisms, but it is not clear yet what kind of information is stored in memory representations. To answer such question, we measured scalp EEG data while subjects performed a Sternberg WM task. Random seven digit numbers were presented sequentially on a monitor. In each trial, subjects judged whether a probe digit was one of the seven digits in a list. We then employed a multivariate pattern analysis based decoding approach to see if electrical brain activity during working memory retention period contains information about the content of the working memory. We can well predict the working memory content for the digits. Our results suggest that activity in frontal and occipital areas within the theta, alpha and beta contain information about the content of working memory. |
