Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Wide-view and stereoscopic visual stimulation are known to facilitate various aspects of visual perception and cognition (e.g., spatial cognition, navigation, and self-motion perception). However, investigating their neural substrates by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with high spatial resolution has been somewhat constrained by technical issues specific to MRI, including a small space with a high magnetic field inside the scanner. We here propose a novel method for presenting a natural wide-view (90 deg in the horizontal direction) stereoscopic image inside an MRI scanner, which is achieved by a custom-developed pair of dichoptic wide-view eyepiece lenses eyes made of non-magnetic material. We designed the optics to be able to simulate far-viewing distances in terms of both vergence and accommodations. Furthermore, we quantitatively assessed the influence of our system on the quality of the acquired images by conducting a human fMRI experiment. The results found no significant effect of our system on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the MR signal in the head region. We demonstrated that our newly developed system enables safe and natural presentation of wide-view stereoscopic images inside MRI scanner with valid fMRI measurement of brain activity.
