Abstract(in English) | This study reviews capacity limitation in a processing from visual perception to short-term visual memory for a single curved figure with multiple convex parts. The capacity limitation can be regarded as set-size effects. The results both in psychophysical experiments and simulations in Signal Detection Theory showed that visual perception has little capacity limitation, in contrast both iconic memory and short-term visual memory (STVM) have limited capacity. Decay in STVM lasted for ten several seconds, and is largely decreased by increasing exposure duration in study stimulus. The variance of stimulus value represented in STVM was the cause for decay. The confusability contributing to the decision process, rather than capacity limitation both in perception and in STVM, is a primary factor in deteriorating recognition of complex curved figures. Only 1 object could be retained in STVM with high fidelity, but at least 4 objects could be retained in STVM with some degree of fidelity. STVM could have little decay for simple curved figure with 4 convex parts. |
