A Note on Analytical Models for CANs

Abstract(in English) In recent years, the controller area networks (CANs), the industry standard of in-vehicle network protocol, have continued to lose its reliability due to highly electromagnetic noise caused by miniaturized inverter circuits. Nakamura et al. proposed hybrid communication protocol as a high reliability method consisting of automatic repeat request (ARQ), forward error correction (FEC), and HALT mode. We describe a fault model in which frame loss rate depends on the transmit error counter (TEC) and analyze the reliability of this protocol. We express the state of discrete time Markov chain and transition probability by TEC and frame error rate (FER). By numerical calculation using transition probability matrix, we show that the average time until the transition to the HALT mode in the hybrid communication protocol becomes longer than that of standard CAN protocol. We also indicate that the average number of data frames lost until transitioning to HALT mode caused by FEC mode is sufficiently small for taking measures by some additional techniques.
