Abstract(in English) | Recently, mobile traffic is increasing exponentially due to the popularity of mobile devices. Therefore, the available bandwidth of wireless links is regarded as one of key performance indicators of a mobile network. The available bandwidth estimation methods using a few probe packets are very useful because they do not have an impact on customer traffic. However, the estimation accuracy of the existing methods does not perform very well due to the behavior of wireless link protocols such as packet concatenation, packet segmentation and HARQ retransmission. In this paper, we propose a novel available bandwidth estimation method for mobile networks. In this method, a series of packets called as a packet train is sent from a sender (a node located at a base station side) to a mobile terminal to estimate the available downlink bandwidth. The packet train consists of several groups of packets. The inter packet-group gap is set at the same value with the TTI (transmission time interval) of the wireless link to be measured. The total packet size of the packet group is increasing linearly. If traffic congestion has occurred in the wireless link, the end-to-end delay of the packet-group becomes long. Therefore, we can estimate the available bandwidth by identifying the packet-group from which the delay starts to increase. We conducted an experiment to evaluate the proposed method by using a commercial LTE system. The results of the experiment show that the proposed method allows us to estimate the available downlink bandwidth of the mobile networks accurately. |
