Contrast Enhancement Method Based on Smoothed Joint Distribution of Saturation and Value Components

Abstract(in English) A histogram equalization (HE) is widely used for image contrast enhancement. In many cases, HE is applied to saturation and/or value components for color images. However, depending on the distribution of the saturation and/or value components, the input image is sometimes excessively enhanced. In this report, we proposed new histogram-based color contrast enhancement method which is able to adjust contrast enhancement degree. The saturation and value components are spread by using the iterative distribution transfer (IDT) and a smoothed joint histogram. In the experiment, the effectiveness and validity are verified by some experiments.
