| Abstract(in English) | This paper discusses rights clearance practiced at the Open University of Japan during the production of contents for its online courses. Starting with OpenCourseWare (OCW), provision of open contents for university courses has evolved into Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). A difference between OCW and MOOCs lies in that MOOCs are designed to grant academic credits. The Open University of Japan has been offering online courses since AY2015. Contents for its online courses are produced in principle by full-time instructors at the university using contents free of royalties and related expenses for all courses. Under such conditions, however, contents production requires not only author’s economic right (copyright) clearance but the comprehensive management of intellectual property rights. |
