Abstract(in English) | Long-term domestic care of the elderly requires a number of sacrifices, one of which being the additional time required for caregivers to provide help to family members. Balancing their own time with the time required to provide domestic care causes caregivers conflicts that may demand them to leave their professional careers. We interviewed experienced caregivers as to the realities of care for aging family members. From our interviews, we found that it is key for caregivers to share their free time and family-care time by networking socially with other caregivers so as to think of family care in a positive manner. We then analyzed the interviewees’ social network construction process. We found that the lack of access to a community with which to share their experiences led caregivers to their initially negative attitudes toward their responsibilities. It was observed that external support prevented caregivers from feelings of alienation, and replaced the burden of their care with a source of positive outlook. These results demonstrated the importance of infrastructure which identifies the beginning of domestic caregiving and supports caregivers to build social networks. |
