Abstract(in English) | This paper proposes a novel image enhancement method for underwater images. Since the underwater images have a strong dominance color, e.g. blue or green due to the water, they tend to be a non-colorful and a low-contrast image. Hence our image enhancement method consists of two steps, i.e. a white-balancing procedure and an enhancement procedure. For the white-balancing, we propose a specific method for the underwater images, which have a water color and an illuminant color. As for the image enhancement, we generate a color-enhanced image and a contrast-enhanced image from the white-balanced image and then integrate the two images. In the experiment, we show effectiveness our method by comparing with conventional methods for underwater image and dehazing methods. Additionally, SIFT correspondence search method is applied to an original image pair and our result pair, and it shows that the proposed image enhancement method is useful as pre-processing for underwater image processing. |
