Design and Implementation of High-Speed Reliable LED-to-Camera Communication for Smartphones

Abstract(in English) In the IoT era, LED-to-camera communication for smartphones is promising as low-cost, small-size, and intuitive data access to things. However; there are intermittent time gaps between camera frames, which makes it unsuitable for large data transfer and thus narrows its usage to simple applications such as exchanging a few tens of bits of ID. Towards this, we propose a packet retransmission strategy which leverages the periodicity of burst packet losses and achieve more than 10x throughput of previous works without data losses. In order to achieve high through put based on this strategy, we also propose modulation and packetization methods which facilitate the clock extraction and shorten start codes and an error detection method which leverages the frame brightness and rising up of PWM. The experimental results show that our communication method can be implemented in wide range of smartphone models.
