Abstract(in English) | We report details of cavitation bubble-induced cell oscillation. In the study, we evaluated inactivation of specific microorganisms (including fungi, bacteria, and algae) by ultrasound at different frequencies. The fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the bacteria Escherichia coli, and three kinds of algae were tested. S. cerevisiae and the algae showed frequency dependence of inactivation. In contrast, activation of E. coli did not depend on frequency. The resonances frequencies and area deformations of the cells were analyzed by shell oscillation. The resonance frequencies were each on the order of several megahertz, consistent with the experimental results. Cells that showed constant deactivation at all frequencies showed a larger change in cell surface area compared with other microorganisms. Such cells are assumed to have been inactivated by bubble-induced mechanical oscillation of the cell wall. |
