Improvement of the characteristics of a terahertz SPR waveguide sensor with an analyte container

Abstract(in English) Frequency responses of a terahertz surface plasmon resonance waveguide sensor with an analyte container are improved with attention to the waveguide structure. First, we investigate a two-dimensional (2D) sensor with an anlyte container made of SiO2 and COP, the refractive indices of which are 1.94 and 1.52, respectively. It is revealed that the frequency response degrades as the refractive index of the container is increased, i.e., the container with a low refractive index is preferable for the sensor. It is also shown that the degradation of the frequency response is caused by the reduced excitation of the SPP mode. Therefore, we increase the excitain of the SPP mode using a narrower core compared to that in the sensing section. It is found that the narrower core is effective in increasing the excitation of the SPP mode, leading to a steep frequency response. After investigating the 2D sensor, we next study a three-dimensional (3D) sensor. As is the case of the 2D sensor, the use of a narrower core is effective in improving the frequency response of the 3D sensor. Finally, we determine a sufficient size of the container for the 3D sensor.
