Waveguide Polarization Converter Consisting of a Core without a Defect Section

Abstract(in English) Two types of polarization converters consisting of a core without a defect section are numerically investigated. One is the converter with a metal strip placed in the vicinity of the core on an SiO2 substrate (Type M). The metal strip with Ag, Au, Al and Cu are adopted for comparison and the conversion characteristics are studied. It is found that a sufficient metal width leads to low loss operation, since the localized field is reduced at the edge of the metal strip. To eliminate the propagation loss caused by the complex permittivity of the metal, we next propose a converter in which a dielectric strip is placed in the vicinity of the core on an SiO2 substrate (Type L+). The conversion properties are compared with those obtained with the conventional configuration with a defect core (Type L-). As a result, the proposed converter (Type L+) achieves almost the same wideband properties as the Type L-, while realizing a reduced insertion loss. It is also found that the core without a defect section contributes to reduction in the reflection loss at the junction of the input and output.
