Sonoluminescence and bubble dynamics in glycerol-water system

Abstract(in English) To investigate the mechanism of sonoluminescence (SL) from viscous liquid, we measured the SL intensity, SL pulse width and the bubble dynamics in glycerol-water mixtures. The SL intensity increased and maximized at 80% glycerol at ultrasonic frequency of 50 kHz. Conversely, the SL intensity decreased with increasing glycerol concentration at 150 kHz. High-speed shadowgraphy of cavitation bubbles demonstrated that spherical oscillation due to viscous damping and the increase in the tiny bubble number are responsible for the result at 50 kHz. At 150 kHz viscous damping prohibited bubble compression, which resulted in the temperature decrease at bubble collapse. The SL pulse width showed broadening with increasing the glycerol concentration. The broadening may be associated with a viscous slowing of the bubble wall in the very last stage of the initial collapse. The multiple-peak pulse observed from NaCl solution of 80% glycerol at 28 kHz is arisen from the superposition of SL pulse from characteristic bubble cluster radiating Na emission.
