A Proposal of Low-loss and Compact Si Wire 90 degree Waveguide Bend Using Clothoid Curves

Abstract(in English) A low-loss and compact Si wire 90° waveguide bend using clothoid curves is proposed to reduce the bending loss in optical circuits. The clothoid curves can suppress the mismatch of the electromagnetic fields between straight and bent waveguides since the curvature of clothoid curves linearly increases from zero. From the numerical results based on 3-D finite element method, we found that there is an optimum ratio of clothoid curves in the bending waveguide. By using the clothoid curves with appropriate ratio, the bending loss is significantly reduced compared with the normal bend. Additionally, the comparison with the bending waveguide using offset connection is evaluated, and the advantages of the clothoid curves in terms of the operating wavelength range and the fabrication tolerance are demonstrated.
