Power Reduction of OLED by Tone Mapping Based on Helmholtz-Kohlrausch effect

Abstract(in English) The Helmholtz-Kohlraush effect is a visual characteristics that humans perceive color having higher saturation as brighter. In the proposed method, the pixel value is reduced by increasing the saturation while maintaining the lightness. To suppress excessive increase of saturation, the increase rate of saturation k is changed according to lightness. As k increases, power reduction increases but the picture quality degrades. From the subjective evaluation experiment for the natural images, it was found that the maximum k is 2.0 to suppress the image degradation. In this case, the power reduces 8.0%. We also confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method by using a smart phone having 4.5-in. AMOLED.
