Degradation mechanism of SrAl2O4:Eu,Dy phosphor for afterglow

Abstract(in English) Three kinds of long afterglow phosphors such as SrAl2O4:Eu,Dy were exposed to water, and the deterioration caused by moisture and heating and luminescent characteristics of phosphors were investigated. It was found that SrAl2O4 showed remarkable deterioration and some kinds of hydroxide such as Sr3Al2(OH)12 was formed even in the case of exposure for about 1 hour. The reason for the deterioration was the decomposition promoted by adsorption of moisture on the surface activated by heating. It was suggested that it is useful to reduce Sr atom existence on the surface.
