Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Metal plate (iron or copper) is fixed on the top of the contact gap. Thickness of them is 1mm. Circular cylindrical electrical contacts are opened at constant speed and break arcs are generated between the contacts in a 200V-450VDC circuit. Break arcs are magnetically blown-out in the air. Circuit current when contacts are closed is 10A. Height direction of motion of break arcs is restricted by the side surface of the metal plate. Experiments are carried out by changing the position of the metal plate in the horizontal direction from the fixed tip of cathode to the movable anode side. Maximum arc height with the iron plate is lower than that without the plate or with the copper plate. When the copper plate is separated from the fixed cathode, break arcs are lengthened upward at the cathode side of the plate. When the copper plate is moved close to the fixed cathode, break arcs are lengthened upward at the anode side of the plate and reignitions may occur.
