A study on the joint coordination in reaching and grasping movements using the UCM analysis

Abstract(in English) A human hand has many joints, and various tasks are achieved by the joint synergy. The joint synergy is quantitatively evaluated using the UCM analysis. However, a human hand has complex structure and it is difficult to measure finger joints accurately. Therefore, the relationship between performance variable and state variable cannot be determined, and the joint synergy during reaching and grasping movements has not been analyzed yet. In this study, we measured reaching and grasping movements when the grasped objects were cylinders with different radius, and the relationship between the performance variables and state variables was identified by neural network. As a result of UCM analysis, transition of coordination between the finger joints during the reach and grasping movements could be evaluated.
