Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study used a self-paced reading paradigm to investigate how learners’ on-line processing of linguistic information, including (a)phrase structural rules, and (b)semantic information, differs depending on task types and their proficiencies. Participants were given one of the following three tasks: (1) plausibility judgment, (2) grammaticality judgment, and (3) semantic judgment. Results revealed that although lower proficient learners who performed the grammaticality judgment task detected phrase structural violations, as did higher proficient learners, it took them more time to process the violations when they performed the plausibility judgment task and the semantic judgment task. However, lower proficient learners could identify semantic violations regardless of task types. These results indicate that lower proficient learners do not process syntactic information preferentially unless they pay attention to it.
