Learning Japanese as a heritage language through project-based activities

Abstract(in English) “Nagano Namiai International Camp” is a summer camp with various project-based activities, designed to develop participating children’s heritage Japanese language. This paper offers an overall picture of the Camp and discusses various pedagogical and practical issues that the author learned through his four weeks as a member of the Camp Staff. More specifically, the paper examines (1) Integration of Content and Language Education, (2) Multi-age Instructional Approach and (3) Contextual Learning of the Camp. We will try to show how learners get opportunities to develop not only language skills but also Cognitive and Affective skills.
